Chapter Nineteen

I reached out and stopped a couple of inches from her grasp. “Do not eat me.”

She laughed and shook her head. “Don’t worry, I promise you, I would never. Not after seeing how you treat everyone in the village, especially your bonded women.” She stretched her arm out further. “Take it.”

I reached closer and Orsir’s voice rose in my head. “Careful, I’ve seen these women take out more men than my own have. Although, the death they provide looks... interesting.”

I held back and stared into her eyes. “I can’t. I just can’t take that risk, as much as I want to know what it is like.”

Jade took another step back, unable to hide the sadness in her eyes. “Oh, okay. You’re right, that’s silly of me.” She shook her head and glanced down at the ground. “Well, I’ll let you get back to what you were doing.” She straightened and let out a long breath to compose herself. “Please, let me know if there is anything I can do for you or the others. I know you may not think we are capable of much, but I promise you, we are quite skilled.”

I smiled and nodded. “I believe it. Thank you, Jade.” I paused. “And thank you for your honesty.”

Jade glanced up and smiled shyly, and hurried away.

I turned back to face Orsir. He gave me a curious glance. “I trust her, but I have to decide which risks I’m going to take right now.”

“And what about flying? I thought you were going to test that out this evening.” He responded hopefully.

"Yes, but I need to make a quick stop first. I’ll be back shortly, I need you to stay here." I realized I was taking an unnecessary risk by not bringing anyone with me.

Orsir shrugged and lowered back down onto the ground. “If you wish.”

I was confident in my abilities, but I thought it would be foolish to fly without a plan. Although, I knew exactly who I should bring. I hurried back to the house and gave each of my bonded a quick kiss as they slept and knelt by Alysain’s side. The griffon girl was sleeping peacefully next to the fire and looked like an absolute angel.

“Alysain,” I said in a whisper. “Alysain, wake up. I need your help.”

Her eyes opened slowly and she sat up. “Logan? What’s the matter?!”

I gave her a small smile. “Nothing. I’m sorry to wake you, but I need your help.”

“Anything, my love.” She grabbed her armor and weapons. “Lead the way.”

I thanked Cress and Shah as we left. Both lizard women were steadfastly guarding the house. Alysain and I hurried back to Orsir and hung her lantern across from the one I’d left from earlier.

I walked over to Orsir who was now back up on his feet. It was interesting to me that out of all of my bonded he acted the most differently around Alysain.

Deep down, I think she scared the shit out of him. Although he had every right to be scared, she could take him out faster than almost every single one of my bonded.
